Regardless of if you are holidaying for a long weekend or for multiple weeks at a time, you will need to navigate cooking dinner for your family. Luckily, there are a whole host of lodge dinner recipes that work well, and all of them have been designed with kids in mind.
Lodge-Friendly, Kid-Friendly Dinner Ideas
- Homemade Pizza – There are very few kids out there who don’t like pizza. Making homemade pizza could be a lot easier than you think. You can make your own pizza dough, or you could buy ready to use dough from your local supermarket, both of which work well. Let kids choose their favourite toppings – such as tomato sauce, cheese, pepperoni, vegetables, ham and even pineapple – and bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly. It’s a great dinner if you have fussy eaters, as everyone can pick and choose their own toppings.
- Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce – This is a dinner you can rustle up in a matter of minutes. It’s a budget-friendly recipe too. Start by cooking spaghetti according to the instructions. Then sauté diced onions and garlic in olive oil until they are soft. Add in a tin of tomatoes, salt, pepper and any of your favourite seasonings. Let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, before serving over the spaghetti with a sprinkle of grated cheese. It might be a messy option, but the kids are sure to love it.
- Tacos – There’s something especially social about taco night. It’s a meal the entire family can get involved in. Cook mince with taco seasoning until browned and cooked through, adding in any additional seasonings. This will form the main filling of your tacos. Enable the kids to assemble their own tacos by setting up a taco bar with taco shells, along with toppings such as grated cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes, salsa, sour cream and guacamole. Everyone can build their own tacos with their favourite topics.
- Quesadillas – If your family is a fan of Mexican-inspired dishes, quesadillas is one of the lodge dinner recipes that you’ll want to repeat time and time again. It’s quick, easy and delicious. Spread refried beans on a tortilla wrap and top with shredded cheese. Then add any additional fillings. Cooked chicken, diced vegetables or beans are all good options. Place another tortilla wrap on top, sandwiching everything together, and cook in a pan until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Cut the quesadilla into wedges and serve with salsa and sour cream.
- Baked Chicken Tenders – Most children like chicken nuggets, so baked chicken tenders are sure to go down a treat. Plus, they are a healthier take on a takeaway classic. Cut chicken breasts into strips and dip them in a beaten egg, before coating the strips in breadcrumbs seasoned with salt and pepper. Place the strips on a baking tray and bake in the oven for around 15-20 minutes, until cooked and crispy.
- Macaroni and Cheese – This recipe is a one-pot take on macaroni and cheese, making it quick and easy to make. In a large pot, combine the macaroni, chicken or vegetable broth and milk. Bring to a boil over a medium heat, before reducing it slightly and stirring until the pasta is cooked. Then stir in your grated cheddar cheese – cheddar and Parmesan work best, but you can use any type of cheese you like – and butter until melted and creamy. This is also when you can add in any extras, such as cooked bacon, ham or steamed broccoli. Once combined, season with salt and pepper, and serve to your hungry little ones.
A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that cooking in a lodge is complicated and stressful, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Though you are likely to have slightly less space than you would have at home, lodges are fully equipped with everything you need for lodge dinner recipes that your kids will love.
